INDIGO ARROWS
B.A., M.I.D., LEED AP, PIDIM
BIOGRAPHY
Destiny Seymour is an Anishinaabe interior designer based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is a member of the Peguis First Nation community. After graduating with her master’s degree in interior design from the University of Manitoba, Destiny worked at a local architecture firm for over 10 years before starting her own company. In 2016, Destiny created Indigo Arrows, a textile design studio focused on creating products that reflect the culture and history of local Indigenous peoples in Manitoba. Indigo Arrows offers a range of table linens, pillows, and blankets that showcase patterns from local Indigenous pottery and bone tools that date from 400 to over 3000 years old. These patterns are picking up where her ancestors left off.

Indigo Arrows has expanded into a full-time design studio that takes on commercial design projects. Destiny’s interior design practice takes a critical look at the representation of Indigenous cultures with spaces. Her design mission is to respectfully reflect local Indigenous cultures and identity within architectural forms, interior spaces, furniture, and textiles. The Indigo Arrows studio follows a design
process that acknowledges community engagement, inclusiveness, and collaboration
when creating new works. Indigo Arrows now offers commercial finishes such as carpet tile, fabrics, and custom furniture. To learn more about the Indigo Arrows products and services, please visit indigoarrows.ca.

Destiny’s father, late Elder Valdie Seymour, was an integral part of the Indigo Arrows team. His teachings guided the development of all her patterns and project designs. His teachings on love, respect, and reconciliation will continue to guide her design philosophy.
PRESENTATION: Representation through Design
- Overview of my early years as an interior designer in a firm. My experience working on projects for Indigenous clients and the challenges with budgets, finishes, and incorporating Indigenous worldviews in the physical space-starting my own design studio to address the lack of commercial products designed by an Indigenous artist that I could put into architectural projects.

- The early years studying ancient pottery and bone tools to teach about history through textiles

- Working with my dad, Elder Valdie Seymour, to develop patterns and using Anishinaabemowin to name patterns

- Sharing my experience working as an Indigenous Design Consultant throughout the years with large architectural firms while I design commercial finishes such as carpet tile and upholstery fabrics

- Design can be a healing and teaching tool. I’m still searching for ways to incorporate stories and language into spaces and products.

MAN & SON

BIOGRAPHY
Emily Wilson:
Emily Wilson is a Victoria-based designer and woodworker who thrives in working across disciplinary boundaries of architectural, interior, product, and digital design. After graduating from the Architecture program at Dalhousie University, Emily honed her skills working in architecture firms in Calgary and Victoria before branching out to start her own practice. Along with business partner, Jennifer Kalman, Man & Son Design blends forward-thinking design with a meticulous eye for detail and exceptional craftsmanship. Their latest venture, A Light Studio, is a collection of made-to-order, handcrafted lighting, offering a unique collaborative approach to designers looking to specify lighting in residential and commercial projects.

Jennifer Kalman:
Jennifer Kalman is deeply intrigued by the profound influence that buildings exert on their occupants. With a background in psychology, she possesses a keen understanding of the human experience and how it is shaped by the built environment. Jennifer recognizes that the characteristics of spaces significantly impact how individuals feel.

A hands-on professional, Jennifer can frequently be found on site, collaborating closely with trades to iron out details. She believes that active involvement in the construction process minimizes unexpected challenges and leads to the most cohesive design outcomes. As co-founder of Man & Son Design with business partner Emily Wilson, Jennifer is part of a dynamic team of young female entrepreneurs who are reshaping the design landscape in Victoria, BC. Together, they advocate for Slow Design principles, focusing on intentional and enduring creations. Through their latest initiative, A Light Studio, they are developing solutions that merge aesthetic beauty with ethical craftsmanship, offering a distinctive approach to lighting that is both engaging and meaningful.

PRESENTATION: Exploring Dualities in Design: Man & Son Design and its Offshoots
In this talk, we delve into the dynamic interplay of dualities shaping our design journey. From the collaborative essence of Man & Son Design to the unique narratives of its offshoots, A Light Studio and New Neighbour, we explore how opposing yet complementary forces—craft and technology, art and utility, individual and collective—inform our work. By embracing these dualities, we create spaces and objects that balance tradition with contemporary vision, demonstrating how contrasts can unify to craft meaningful, lasting designs. This session offers insight into navigating creative tension to inspire thoughtful design.
