WANDA DALLA COSTA
BIOGRAPHY
Wanda Dalla Costa, FRAIC, AIA (she/her) is an architect, educator, and member of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation. She is the founder of Tawaw Architecture Collective, a cross-border design practice licensed in both Canada and the United States, specializing in Indigenous Placekeeping and human-centered design.

At Arizona State University, Dalla Costa is the founding director of the Indigenous Design Collaborative, a community-driven design and research center. Presentation: INDIGenOUS ARTISTs + AI: The Future of Interior Design
Exploring how Indigenous architecture informs interiors, Wanda Dalla Costa reveals how co-creation with artists and emerging AI tools can shape authentic, culturally grounded design futures.

Rooted in Tawaw Architecture Collective's practice, this talk explores how an Indigenous architectural process—centered on story, relationship, and reciprocity—naturally extends into the interior realm. Drawing from collaborations with Indigenous artists and makers, Wanda Dalla Costa shares how co-creation shapes material, pattern, and atmosphere. The presentation also considers AI, asking how technology might amplify authenticity. Together, these threads outline a future of Indigenous interior design grounded in cultural authenticity and resilience.

He has collaborated with a diverse range of client groups, successfully completing numerous institutional projects, academic & community libraries, and high-performance affordable housing developments, including Crosstown Affordable Mixed-Use Development, Fort St. John Passive House building and Camas Gardens Supportive Housing. PRESENTATION: New Indigenous Law Wing & Fraser Law Building Renovation, University of Victoria
The New Indigenous Law Wing transforms UVIC’s Fraser Law Building, providing a fully Integrated home for the University’s Canadian Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders program (JD/JID), a joint common law/Indigenous law degree. Such a purpose-built space and program for the study of Indigenous laws are the first of their kind in Canada and globally unique. By expanding and renovating the Fraser Building, the university has created a national hub for dialogue, research, and knowledge transfer.

The design process was a truly collaborative effort, and the architectural team itself was a
collaboration of three firms (Two Row Architect – Prime, Teeple Architects, and Low Hammond Rowe Architects), brought together our shared expertise, values, and commitment to engage with and listen to the staff, students, and the Indigenous nations of the territory on which the university is built on. The design honours its host, the Coast Salish peoples, and key community members were consulted throughout the project, including Elders, Hereditary Chiefs, artists, and knowledge keepers from the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ communities. Key design elements emerged from these sessions, which formed the basis of guiding design principles. In this presentation, we hope to share our experience of listening and collaboration that resulted in the design of the New Indigenous Law Wing and Fraser Building renovation
